The Swap by Robyn Harding. (2020).
**4 out of 5 stars**
Low is not your average teen, possibly because of her hippy parents or her isolated island hometown. She doesn’t fit in and neither does newcomer Freya – a beautiful once-famous social media influencer. Low signs up for Freya’s pottery class and adores her. Freya shares some of her secrets and desires. Low feels like she belongs…until Freya makes a new friend in Jamie. One night, Freya suggests she and Jamie swap husbands for the night. It should have been a harmless fling been consenting adults but instead it upends their lives. And provides Low with the perfect opportunity to unleash her growing resentment…
Wow, what a tale of obsession and extremely toxic relationships. The centre of everything is Freya, who is the only main character where we don’t experience her point of view. We see Freya only through the other’s eyes, and it’s clear very quickly that she is one extremely manipulative woman. Low is a teenager who becomes basically obsessed with Freya immediately; in one way it was a bit sad really and I felt for poor lonely young Low but on the flipside Low had some concerning behaviours. Jamie was the most likeable character in my opinion, however even she was completely drawn in by the enigmatic Freya. I found myself completely drawn into this novel and would happily recommend for anyone looking for a compelling, modern and edgy thriller.
